The main objective was how to use weaving strategies to make connections at an urban scale of the Huangupu River to an industrial area that needed revitalization to influence a growth of commerce and entertainment for tourists and locals.

The Site:
The interaction between the Huangpu River and existing road system of the old and new city, was a design focus to capture. The change in movement throughout the overall urban scheme to make direct connections on ground and elevated levels were important to distinguish in order to bring in connected attractions to the micro scale of the site. By making connections visually and physically to the existing context, it helped provoke interwoven design strategies throughout. By identifying key connection points outside of the context, the design makes direct connections to the outside attractions as a way to draw movement into the site. Through interlinked circulation lines, the design creates a sense of direction at multi-levels that interwove into itself to make direct connections at different levels. The points identified outside of the site, not only direct the start of the wrap, but also the points of location for the design to connect on the ground with the existing road system in order to provoke a dialogue with the ground plane and the plane above the road.

Tower Wrapped Structure:
From the ideas of the conceptual model, the same strategy was implemented for the tower’s structure and massing. By determining where the curves intersected from the different angles established, the location of the vertical towers and the circulation cores were developed. In order to draw people into the vertical cores through a triangular path system similar to the movement of the general circulation introduced in the overall urban plan, the intersecting lines pulls up in section at the center of the triangulation from the ground to the sky park to create an hour glass shaped configuration that helps transition into all elevated parks respectively. Using the technique of looping and twisting, the physical model made smooth connections for each condition while implying a diagonal structured system for the links to intertwine. Through the woven system, the vertical massing allowed for internal structure and a void that allowed for a different degree of transparency through the model. The conceptual model pushed the design into a continuous system between the towers, sky park, and elevated park coincidentally.
塔楼的设计同样在概念模型所示的编织系统的控制下生成。在该编织系统下,通过调整曲线交叉的位置和角度,塔楼的位置、形态以及核心筒都得以确定.下方的一组图解抽象地阐述了该编织系统是如何吸引人群的。该三角形的路径系统是对城市尺度上既存的人流线路的抽象。通过在三角形中央设置吸引子,改变既存的人流线路,将人们吸引到中央的塔楼中。同时,在塔楼中部设置大型公共空间——空中公园,使塔楼形态如同沙漏状,以更充分地服务上部、下部的人员. 通过套环、扭曲等技艺,建筑的每处细节都得以平滑连接,同时又在对角线方向形成互相纠缠、盘旋的结构体系。通过编织系统,建筑在结构上、机理上(变幻的透明度)获得了双赢。而概念模型则巧妙地将该设计引向了一个塔楼、空中公园、架空公园相互平滑连贯的系统。

Program Through the Wrap:
The program of the design was generated through the same idea of the wrapped forms designed. By the tower’s massing being larger at top and bottom, the main areas of attraction are able to interact with the entertainment and retail zones that links with the towers. This moves into most of the commercial, hotel, and office spaces where the elevated park intersects itself. This intersection serves as a main connection point for the elevated park and the tower that transition to the sky park vertically.
